The Adult Support Programme at FAME India offers individualised support plans for adults above the age of 25. Our aim is to enable adults with mental retardation to become as independent as possible, carrying out their everyday activities to the best of their ability. More often than not, these adults find themselves at home where they depend on aged parents, or caregivers. Others remain at institutions, or are employed in sheltered workshops.

The programme helps participants retain learned skills and reinforces adaptive behaviour – the   collection of conceptual, social and practical skills that we learn to function in our everyday lives. We do this through support and activities such as:

  • Home living activities – personal hygiene, taking care of personal belongings, operating home appliances, participating in leisure activities, etc.
  • Community living activities – using transport, visiting friends and relatives, shopping and purchasing goods, etc.
  • Health and safety activities – taking medication, maintaining a nutritious diet, maintaining physical health and emotional well being.
  • Social activities – socialising within and outside the family, making and maintaining friends, communicating with others, maintaining socially appropriate behaviour, etc.

The programme also offers respite to caregivers.
